Only a year after Britten’s Peter Grimes was premiered in 1945, the opera’s Four Sea Interludes were performed in concert – a testament to their mesmerising power and beauty. Stravinsky began writing his Violin Concerto (1931) with some reluctance, as he did not play the violin himself. The acerbic, witty result is nonetheless dazzling. Bartók’s concerto (1944) was written, he confessed, out of ‘homesickness and hope for his country, and of peace and brotherhood for the world’.
