The overture of Weber’s landmark Romantic opera (1821) introduces the story’s dark and supernatural landscape. In Beethoven’s Violin Concerto (1806), according to one critic, he ‘left us no music in which he is more sure of himself, and none in which his humanity is more warmly evident.’ Mendelssohn’s symphony was inspired by his Italian travels. ‘Now has begun what I had always thought to be the supreme joy in life.’ he wrote.
