Sir Simon Rattle and Peter Sellars pit their creative partnership against one of the most formidable and exciting operas of the last 50 years: Ligeti's Le grand macabre.

Set in a land of despots, debauchery and drunkenness, Le grand macabre is a wild journey through the end of the world, bolstered by music from one of the most imaginative composers of the 20th century. Ligeti wasn't so sure that you could even class it as an opera, and he despised the term 'anti-operas', so trendy among his peers. So Le grand macabre has become the first, the only, and possibly the last ever example of an anti-anti-opera. Because with a theatrical vision as expansive and brilliant as this, it’s hard to imagine anything that comes close.

Please note that these performances contain very strong language and adult themes
