Announcement – Landmark Barbican Transformation Plan

The City of London Corporation has formally approved the delivery plan for the Barbican Renewal Programme.

Published:

The £191 million City Corporation capital funding package announced in December will secure the future of the Centre for the next 50 years. Please see the Barbican website for full details of their announcement.

To deliver the upgrades safely and efficiently, most Barbican programmes and performances within the Centre will pause from the end of the LSO’s 2027/28 Season in time for the re-opening in June 2029 and the LSO 2029/30 Season.

The LSO welcomes this vital investment in the modernisation and improvement of the Barbican Centre, which will deliver significant benefits for all our audiences. We remain fully committed to presenting a full programme of performances for the 2028/29 Season across a range of venues in London, as well as on tour across the UK and internationally. Our next two full Seasons at the Barbican, 2026/27 and 2027/28, will proceed as planned.

LSO St Luke’s will remain open throughout the Barbican’s closure period and will become the hub of the Orchestra’s operations and activity, including an expanded programme of live concerts, recordings and broadcasts, making full use of our newly enhanced digital facilities. Delivery of the LSO Discovery education and community programme will continue uninterrupted.
