Archive

As London’s oldest orchestra, we have a fascinating history.

Explore Our Archive

Our archive is available to the public by appointment. Much of the Orchestra’s performance history has been inputted into a database and, although not yet complete, it is possible for our archivist to supply enquirers with lists (either by post or email) upon request.

Our archive includes:

  • A complete collection of programmes for the LSO’s own promoted concerts dating from 1904 and bound in volumes.
  • Loose copies of programmes from the 1920s, including outside engagements (eg Proms, Edinburgh Festival, provincial venues etc).
  • A collection of publicity leaflets and posters (incomplete) dating from 1904.
  • Bound minute books from LSO Board meetings from 1905–79.
  • Photographs from throughout our history, in particular a good collection from the 1912 trip to the US.
  • Many letters, memorabilia and documents, some signed by conductors and artists (not yet catalogued).
  • Oral history CDs: a collection of interviews with past players and administrators giving their personal memories of their time in the Orchestra.
  • Attendance sheets and diaries for all LSO engagements dating from 1968.
