Did you know?

Sergei Rachmaninov, one of the greatest pianists as well as composers of the 20th century, recorded many of his own works for the piano, allowing us a tantalising glimpse of the performance style of the great master himself. Rachmaninov performed twice with the LSO:

  • 18 November 1929 at the Queen’s Hall – he played his Piano Concerto No 4, the first performance in London, conducted by Albert Coates.
  • 16 October 1936 at the Queen’s Hall – he played his Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, conducted by Sir Hamilton Harty.
