LSO Create

LSO Create offers exciting opportunities for adults with learning disabilities, their supporters and carers to engage with the LSO as audience members, active music-makers and performers.

Monday Club

The LSO Create Monday Club meets roughly once a month at LSO St Luke's 11am–3pm and all abilities are welcome.

It's a diverse mix of individuals who attend either alone or with family members or as part of a group from day/residential centres.

United by a love of music, they are inspired by repertoire being performed by the LSO, and with LSO musicians and Mark Withers (LSO workshop leader), they compose, improvise and create music together.

There are occasional taster days for new groups and every year there is an opportunity for a small group to perform alongside LSO musicians.

Kindness Contagion

Summer 2020

During the Covid-19 lockdown from April-July 2020, LSO Create and supporters worked on a remote creative project entitled ‘Kindness Contagion’, taking part in online Zoom sessions alongside LSO musicians. They chose a series of images that remind them of the idea of kindness, and then composed new music in response to those images. Here is the final film.

One Thousand and Two

June 2019

On 6 June 2019 a group of participants who attend LSO Create Monday Club performed One Thousand and Two, a series of individual and collective reflections on Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade, on the Barbican stage with the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Elim Chan. The piece was devised by LSO Create and workshop leader Mark Withers, and Rachel Leach prepared the orchestral textures inspired by Rimsky-Korsakov. The video below gives a sense of how the piece was created.

The Elements

July 2018

In July 2018 we experimented with different forms of animation using paints, gels and silhouette characters to create a short film based around the elements. During an intensive week of music-making, a small group from LSO Create Monday Club then created original music to accompany the film and bring the animations to life. The music you will hear below was recorded live on 20 July 2018 at LSO St Luke’s during the LSO Create & Friends concert performance.

Outreach Visits

LSO Create runs music workshops in colleges, residential and day care centres in the community. This programme complements our Monday Club workshops and enables us to work directly with colleges and centres to plan tailored music projects for their students, service users and staff. This work primarily focuses on working with adults with more profound disabilities who might find it more difficult to get to and fully benefit from the Monday Club sessions at LSO St Luke’s.

All LSO Create activities are free.
