Terry Morton (1934–2012)

First Violin (1966–1991); Personnel Manager (1991–1999)

The LSO was saddened to hear of the death of former LSO violinist Terry Morton on 15 January 2012.

Terry was born in Sheffield and studied the violin at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester. He joined the LSO as a member of the Second Violin section in 1966 following nine years with the Hallé Orchestra.

Obituary: Nigel Gomm (1959–2011)

Second Trumpet (1988–2011)

The LSO is deeply saddened by the recent death of LSO Trumpeter, Nigel Gomm, on Sunday 30 October 2011 at the age of 52 after a short illness.

Nigel began playing the trumpet at the age of eight, achieving Grade 8 by the age of 11. Whilst at school he travelled weekly to the Royal Academy of Music to have lessons with Sidney Ellison. He went on to study there full-time from 1978–1982, still with Sidney, but also with Bill Houghton. On leaving the RAM Nigel went straight into a career of West End shows and recording sessions, where he gained a significant reputation for his Piccolo Trumpet playing.

Kathryn McDowell awarded CBE

Managing Director of the London Symphony Orchestra, Kathryn McDowell, has been awarded a CBE for services to music in the Queen's Birthday Honours list 2011

Chairman of the LSO, Lennox Mackenzie, said; 'this is a greatly deserved recognition of her hard work and commitment over many years to music both at the LSO and in her previous roles elsewhere.'

Obituary: Harold Lawrence (1923–2011)

LSO General Manager (1968–73)

The LSO is sad to announce the death of former General Manager, Harold Lawrence, on 22 August 2011 in California; he was 88.

Harold Lawrence was born and brought up in New York. He had always wanted to be a concert pianist but at age 15, started too late. Instead his career began at WQXR Radio and in 1956 he became Music Director of Mercury Records. His editing skills became legendary and it was at this time that he brought together the LSO and conductor Antal Dorati. Over the next ten years this winning combination made a series of acclaimed recordings.

The LSO was deeply saddened to hear of the passing of its former Principal Trumpet, Maurice Murphy, on Thursday 28 October 2010. Our thoughts and condolences are with his wife and family.

The LSO dedicated its concert on Friday 19 November 2010 to Maurice's memory.
