Obituary: James Mallinson (1943–2018)

The London Symphony Orchestra was extremely saddened to hear of the sudden death of the record producer James Mallinson on Friday after a short illness.

James was an outstandingly talented producer, with a gifted ability to listen discerningly, subtly and critically, and to get the best out of artists in recording. His string of Grammies and special awards throughout his career bear testament to that.

James was at the forefront of the recording world as it evolved and he was involved with LSO Live, the Orchestra’s own record label, from its beginnings nearly 20 years ago. He enjoyed a strong rapport with the Orchestra and its conductors, as well as bringing his vast experience and expertise to the fledgling label. James was always ahead of the game in his own thinking, enabling him to grasp opportunities as they arose and LSO Live benefitted greatly from his creative spirit.

Our thoughts are with his family at this sad time.
