Obituary: Maurice Murphy (1935–2010)


Principal Trumpet (1977–2007)

The LSO was deeply saddened to hear of the passing of its former Principal Trumpet, Maurice Murphy, on Thursday 28 October 2010. Our thoughts and condolences are with his wife and family.

The LSO dedicated its concert on Friday 19 November 2010 to Maurice's memory.

In his youth was a member of:
Henton Colliery and Crook Hall Colliery Bands
The Yorkshire Engineering and Welding Company Band
The Fairey Aviation Band, Stockport, during which time he worked as an electrician

1956–61: Solo Cornet with Black Dyke Mills Band
1974–77: Professor at the Royal Northern College of Music
1961–76: Principal Trumpet with the BBC Northern Symphony Orchestra

Joined the London Symphony Orchestra as Principal Trumpet on 9 February 1977 and retired on 3 June 2007

Awarded the MBE in the 2010 New Year's Honours List
