6.15pm Free pre-concert talk: Alexandre Desplat in conversation

Alexandre Desplat conducts the London Symphony Orchestra in a concert featuring some of his best known film music at the Barbican on 11 December. French composer Desplat is one of Hollywood’s most sought after film score writers and has a close relationship with the LSO, widely regarded as one of the world’s finest film orchestras. They will perform music from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, The King's Speech, The Queen, Philomena, Argo, The Imitation Game, Twilight: New Moon, Fantastic Mr Fox, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Coco before Chanel, Girl with a Pearl Earring, many of which were originally recorded by the LSO.

Six-time Oscar nominee, Alexandre Desplat, with hundreds of scores and numerous awards to his credit, is a worthy heir to the French film scoring masters. In 2003 he burst onto the Hollywood scene with his evocative score to Girl with a Pearl Earring (starring Scarlett Johansson and Colin Firth), which earned him nominations at the Golden Globes, BAFTAs and European Film Awards. In 2006, he received his first Academy Award nomination for his score to Stephen Frears' The Queen. In the same year, he also won a Golden Globe for his score to John Curran's The Painted Veil, performed by Lang Lang. In 2008 he composed for Lust, Caution by Ang Lee and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button by David Fincher, which earned him Oscar, BAFTA and Golden Globe nominations.

The LSO is a world-leader in recording music for film. It was the first symphony orchestra ever to record a score specially composed for a film - Arthur Bliss’ Things to Come in 1935. The Orchestra has since recorded music for hundreds of films, including Pixar’s Brave, four of the Harry Potter films, Superman, Raiders of the Lost Ark and all six Star Wars films. A history of the LSO’s film work can be found at
