Obituary: Philip King

Philip J King

The London Symphony Orchestra is deeply saddened to learn of the death of Philip King – dedicated volunteer for 11 years – on 27 December 2014 following a prolonged illness.

Philip first became involved with the LSO in 2003 as a steward at the newly opened LSO St Luke’s. Passionate about introducing others to music, and to fostering community spirit in his local neighbourhood, Philip became one of the Orchestra’s founding Community Ambassadors, a network designed to introduce those living, working or studying locally to the LSO, and the related music-making opportunities on their doorstep. Read a 2005 interview with Philip in the Islington Gazette below.

Philip’s vast local knowledge and endless enthusiasm succeeded in bringing hundreds of new faces to the Barbican and LSO St Luke’s, and his commitment to attending concerts and putting beginners at ease remained constant throughout his illness.

Our thoughts and condolences are with Philip’s family and friends.
