Sir Simon Rattle dedicated the performances of Pelléas et Mélisande on 9 & 10 January 2016 to Pierre Boulez. Here is the text of his tribute, spoken at the beginning of the performances, in full:
"Ladies and gentlemen, musicians and music lovers alike are still struggling to comes to terms with the idea that Pierre Boulez is no longer with us.
Of course he had a long and powerful relationship with the LSO; he conducted countless concerts with them and had a very deep and warm relationship. For me personally I’ve known him for 45 years, as hero, mentor and friend; and for all of us basically all our musical lives he has been there: great composer, magnificent conductor, but also not to forget a funny, charming, generous, wise man.
And it seems very appropriate tonight we play Pelléas et Mélisande, one of the pieces he conducted so masterfully, one of the many pieces he taught to us. We would like to devote this performance to him with profound gratitude and love. Thank you."
