We are delighted that the latest work for our award-winning site LSO Play, Shostakovich Symphony No 5, is now available to watch online. The performance is conducted by LSO Conductor Laureate Michael Tilson Thomas and was recorded at the Barbican Hall in March 2015.
View the orchestra from four camera angles simultaneously, and switch between them and three further angles at any time during the performance to experience the orchestra however you want. Filmed in exquisite detail, you can focus on anything from the tips of the drumsticks on the snare drum to the violinists' fingers plucking their strings.
LSO Play was designed to be particularly useful for teachers and schools, and the site includes downloadable resources at Key Stage 3 level which can be used to develop classroom projects around the symphony.
Shostakovich Symphony No 5 joins three further works on LSO Play – Stravinsky The Rite of Spring conducted by Sir Simon Rattle, Berlioz Symphonie fantastique and Ravel Boléro, both conducted by Valery Gergiev. Each performance includes LSO player masterclasses, listening guides and resources for teachers. And the site will continue to grow as more and more LSO concerts are filmed in this way! Keep checking back for new works.
LSO Play was launched in 2013, quickly achieving recognition in the form of a Webby Award and a Lovie Award in 2014. It was also voted as a FWA 'Site of the Day' in December 2013.
LSO Play is generously supported by the Reignwood Group.
