Ernest Greaves was Sub-Principal Cello from 1965 to 1970. He died in October 2023 at the age of 96. He was born and brought up in Australia and started his career with the Queensland State String Quartet. He came to the UK in the 1950s and took up the position of Co-Principal Cello at the Royal Opera House before joining the LSO in 1965. He left the LSO in 1970 to pursue a freelance career and follow his love of quartet playing.
