Edward Vanderspar has been a Member of the London Symphony Orchestra since 1991, while enjoying a busy career as a chamber musician and soloist. He has given performances and solo recitals all over the world. He has been a frequent Guest Principal with orchestras such as the London Philharmonic Orchestra, World Orchestra for Peace, London Chamber Orchestra and London Sinfonietta.

Edward has given masterclasses at the Royal Academy of Music, Royal College of Music, Guildhall School of Music &Drama, Heidelberg University, Hochschule Karlsruhe and Beijing Conservatoire. He studied in London with Nannie Jamieson and Helen Dowling, and in Switzerland with Max Rostal and Rudolf Barshai.

From Carmine Lauri, Co-Leader

‘Edward has been a very close friend to me for many years and will be missed. We share a common interest of vintage audio equipment, and over the years I have enjoyed restoring his tape machines and other gadgets that he has challenged me to fix. He’s been great company also on tour, where we used to hunt for electronic parts in districts wherever we travelled. I wish Edward a long, well-deserved and happy retirement.’

From Malcolm Johnston, Sub-Principal Viola

‘Ed, I hope you have a very happy retirement, although I am sure you will still be very active on the concert platform, in the studio, writing your long-awaited book and in the driver’s seat of your beloved Austin Healy. Thanks for being the ‘captain’ of the viola section and a great friend. I’ll miss you.’

From Paul Milner, Principal Bass Trombone

‘I’ve known Ed for my whole life in the LSO. He was always very friendly and supportive as a fellow musician. In the last few years, we have got to know each other a little better through our love of cars. He’s given me loads of advice (none of which I’ve taken!) and we have spent many hours on tour sorting out the nuts and bolts of it all. Good luck, Ed, with your future endeavours and I’ll have my earplugs ready (not for your viola playing, but for the drive in your car!)’

Best wishes for your retirement Ed, from everyone at the LSO!
