Tangram is a London-based music collective creating and curating ambitious, multi-disciplinary and culturally-curious productions. Since their conception in 2019, they have been pushing the boundaries with their events, and new music is a huge focus of their mission.
Made up of researchers, composers and performers of Chinese and western instruments, the group wants to break down the idea that China and the West are mutually exclusive entities and connect both ancient traditions in multiple ways. Read on to find out more about their past productions and what to expect in their next endeavour.
Bound/Unbound
9 and 10 August
This August, Tangram present their brand new music theatre work Bound/Unbound at LSO St Luke’s. Featuring musicians from the LSO alongside percussion, soprano and traditional Chinese sword-dancing, the performance will interweave the stories of two of China’s 19th-century heroines: Afong Moy and Qiu Jin.
Bound/Unbound showcases some of the UK’s most dynamic Chinese cross-cultural performers. The event incorporates opera, dance and visual arts to intertwine the stories of Afong Moy and Qiu Jin through eight performers. This includes choreographer and dancer Yining Chen, a specialist in modern Chinese sword dance and percussionist Beibei Wang and Korean soprano soloist Haegee Lee, alongside a ‘string bonaza’ of musicians from the LSO.
Nature Echo
January 2024
Tangram collaborated with performance artist Echo Morgan to musically illustrate the fragile and destructive relationship between humans and our environment.
The performances featured nine musical compositions from four continents categorised into two distinct atmospheres: woodland and ocean. Evocative sounds of ice and plastic were paired with the haunting echoes of vanishing whale songs, culminating in a striking performance art piece from Echo.

The production of YANG QUEEN was a kaleidoscopic experience of music, movement, animation and video art, centred upon the iridescent sound of the yangqin (a Chinese percussive string instrument) and Mantawoman’s charismatic performance style.
