The London Symphony Orchestra residency at Konzerthaus Dortmund

On Friday 24 & Saturday 25 September we play the first concerts and run the first outreach activities of our new residency at the Konzerthaus in Dortmund, Germany.

Originally planned to be a three-year residency starting in the 2020/21 season, it was postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic. During this first visit, Sir Simon Rattle will conduct two concerts:

Friday 24 September
Ondřej Adámek Where are You? (with Magdalena Kožená, mezzo-soprano)
Beethoven Symphony No 6, ‘Pastoral’

Saturday 25 September
Bruckner Discarded Scherzo (1876) and Discarded Finale, ‘Volksfest’ (1878) from Symphony No 4, ed Benjamin-Gunnar Cohrs
Bruckner Symphony No 4, 'Romantic' (1878–81), ed Benjamin-Gunnar Cohrs

A warm welcome to the LSO sign outside the Konzerthaus Dortmund

As well as comprising of three concerts in each year, the residency will feature work with LSO Discovery, our education and outreach programme, building links and new relationships between Kozerthaus Dortmund and Dortmund residents. It is designed to encourage more community-based activity at the Konzerthaus, creating opportunities for community groups to learn about the repertoire performed by the LSO during the concerts.

A big part of the collaboration with LSO Discovery will be to share LSO Discovery's models for creative workshops with community leaders who have an interest in developing their skills, supporting them in learning to lead community work themselves. During this first visit, our animateurs Rachel Leach and Tim Yealland will be leading sessions with trainees who were identified by the KHD, building on sessions begun online earlier in the year.

Residents of Dortmund can enjoy these activities today and tomorrow:

  • TeaTimes with the LSO
Small groups of LSO musicians, in duos, trios and quartets, will be visiting community groups and settings to perform short informal recitals.

  • Creative workshop with community groups
There will be creative workshops led by animateurs Rachel Leach and Tim Yealland with adult community groups, taking place in the foyers of KHD. These will culminate in an informal sharing for family and friends.

  • Pre-concert talk
Rachel Leach will lead a lively discussion with LSO players, exploring their lives as LSO musicians and giving an introduction as what to expect in the concert.

  • After Concert Jam
After the concert, an invited guestlist from the local community will enjoy time to chat with LSO players, some of whom they met in online sessions earlier in the year.

You can follow our visit to Dortmund on Instagram, where percussionist David Jackson and violinst Alix Lagasse will be taking over the KHD Instragram account.

We look forward to returning to Dortmund in April 2022!
