Out now on LSO Live: Shostakovich Symphony No 5

Listen to the first release in Gianandrea Noseda's new LSO Live Shostakovich cycle. Available now, only on Apple Music.

On Friday 22 September 2016, our Principal Guest Conductor took to the Barbican stage to lead the Orchestra through Shostakovich's Fifth Symphony, setting out on a new journey through the fifteen dynamic and dramatic symphonies the composer would write over the course of his life. You can now relive the energy and excitement of that performance on Gianandrea Noseda's latest LSO Live recording, which is available to listen and download now only on Apple Music and iTunes

‘This project comes at the right time in my career, when I feel like I can say something worthwhile about this music. I have taken advantage of my time living in St Petersburg – not as a tourist, but living with the Russian people: going to the market, working in the Mariinsky Theatre; all helping me to understand life there – but it’s only now that I’m not there anymore that I can take a step back and see the music with some perspective.'
– Gianandrea Noseda

One the 20th Century's most iconic artistic statements, few pieces of classical music have been the subject of so much debate and discussion as the Fifth Symphony of Dmitri Shostakovich. Following the ‘justified criticism’ of his opera Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk it marked a turning point in the composer’s career, after which he balanced an even more precarious position as an artist under Stalin’s brutal regime. Gianandrea Noseda is no stranger to the great composer's output, honing his craft at the Mariinsky Theatre in St Petersburg, where he was the first person born outside of Russia to be named Principal Guest Conductor at the historic institution.

Noseda's latest album was made live in concert, alongside Debussy's La Mer and a performance of Haydn's Trumpet Concerto with soloist Philip Cobb.
