Music from the golden age of the recorder: rising star Lucie Horsch performs sonatas and fantasies by Bach, Telemann, Castello and more.
The Programme
As fresh as dew or as soft as velvet; playable by self-taught amateurs or the most skilled virtuosos, and small enough to fit in your pocket. Baroque musicians loved the recorder, and across Europe, composers as varied as Handel, Castello, van Eyck and even Johann Sebastian Bach himself created recorder music that brimmed over with fantasy, exuberance and wit.
The Performers
The brilliance and spontaneity of Lucie Horsch’s playing have made this young recorder virtuoso something of a star in her native Netherlands. Her repertoire spans centuries, but today, with harpsichordist Tom Foster, she focuses on the recorder’s golden age, and music that sounds as vibrant now as the day it was composed.
With Lucie one sees a rare unity between musician and instrument. In her hands, the recorder is not just a musical instrument, but an extension of her personality.’ – Jury Dutch Music Award
Recorded for future broadcast on BBC Radio 3
