John Cage meets Erik Satie. Anything becomes possible, as pianist Betrand Chamayou brings his recital series to an utterly original conclusion.
The Programme
Erik Satie and John Cage looked at music differently and, in doing so, transformed the way that we listen. Satie’s Gnossiennes and Gymnopédies create spaces and sounds that are wholly their own: musical enigmas that defy categorisation. And John Cage redefined the very concept of Western music, creating poetry from silence, and discovering (as we now know) a surprising but very personal kinship with Satie.
The Performers
For pianist Bertrand Chamayou, these two maverick geniuses create a limitless sense of possibility. He discovered Satie’s music purely by chance, and of course John Cage would have had it no other way. ‘I wanted to tell a story’, he says of his recent critically acclaimed album devoted to Satie and Cage, and in this magical conclusion to his recital series, he’ll do exactly that.
Recorded for future broadcast on BBC Radio 3
