Pianist Bertrand Chamayou joins forces with his friend and colleague, the cellist Sol Gabetta, in music of deep poetry and blossoming freshness by Felix Mendelssohn and Benjamin Britten.

The Programme

For Felix Mendelssohn, chamber music was a family business. He wrote cello music for his brother Paul and there’s a special warmth – as well as a glorious sense of song – about these delightful (but under-appreciated) works. That same personal touch gives Benjamin Britten’s only Cello Sonata its unique atmosphere: music of dark poetry and bracing sea breezes, born of the composer’s friendship with the great Russian cellist ‘Slava’ Rostropovich.

The Performers

It’s only fitting, then, that it should be played by another pair of lifelong musical friends. Bertrand Chamayou opens his personal mini-series in the company of Sol Gabetta – the electrifying Argentinean cellist, hailed by critics for ‘performances of blazing individuality’. A dream pairing, in music that thrives on friendship, conversation and (naturally) world-class playing.
