LSO String Ensemble
Roman Simovic director
The string players of the LSO perform some of the greatest examples of music written for their section, by this country’s finest composers.
Both Elgar and Vaughan Williams wrote their works for the virtuosic musicians of the fledgling LSO – in 1905 and 1910 respectively – each using the lush, powerful sounds of the string ensemble to great effect. Britten’s later work, although written in a mere three months, skilfully uses colours and effects that were daring and inventive and helped cement his reputation as a great composer.
