The day begins with a morning watching Gianandrea Noseda guiding the LSO through Berlioz's Romeo and Juliet Suite at the Barbican, followed by a short talk by the conductor.
In the afternoon at LSO St Luke's there will be a talk by expert Julian Rushton on Berlioz and his enduring fascination with Shakespeare, illustrated by performances by soprano Ruby Hughes with pianist Joseph Middleton.
Part of a series of events marking the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare's death.
Timetable
10am–1pm: LSO rehearsal, Barbican Hall
An opportunity to watch the LSO rehearse for the evening performance conducted by Gianandrea Noseda. The rehearsal will contain the following works: Berlioz Romeo and Juliet (suite) and Shostakovich Violin Concerto No 2 with Janine Jansen.
At the end of the rehearsal Gianandrea Noseda will talk briefly to the audience about the repertoire for the day.
3–5pm: Talk and Chamber Music, LSO St Luke’s 161 Old Street EC1V 9NG
Talk, Q&A, and performance with Berlioz expert Julian Rushton and soprano Ruby Hughes with pianist Joseph Middleton.
At 5.30pm you are welcome to attend a free pre-concert chamber music performance back at the Barbican, with performers from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama performing songs on Shakespeare text’s by Korngold, Strauss, Brahms and Chausson.
