Part of the 2016/17 season

Making the first of his two visits to the LSO this season, Sir Antonio Pappano’s programme explores three works of enormous popularity, each for very different reasons.

Now much more well-known that the opera it precedes, the William Tell Overture, and most particularly its finale, is instantly recognisable from countless adverts, TV shows and films. Also a star in the pantheon of classical music is Bruch’s Violin Concerto No 1 – so popular in fact that Bruch himself lamented the lack of performances of his other works. Strauss’ Alpine Symphony charts 11 hours climbing the Swiss Alps, its abundant orchestration perfectly depicting an experience Strauss himself had with his friends.
