Roald Dahl's magical story-telling is as fresh now as it was when he started putting pen to paper following his years as a fighter ace in World War II, so why not join us in celebrating his centenary and re-living the magical stories through music, alongside classical music that Dahl loved. There'll be an opportunity to join in and to finish off, the Orchestra will play Paul Patterson's virtuosic setting of Little Red Riding Hood and the Wolf – one of Dahl's truly Revolting Rhymes.
There are various exciting workshops in the Barbican foyers which take place during the morning of and just before each concert. These differ for each concert but you’ll always get the opportunity to meet LSO players and take part in musical activities.
We also provide a crèche for use during the concert for younger siblings. Those with children under the age of 7 are encouraged to use the crèche, and must book places in advance – please see the information below.
10.30am–12.45pm, main foyers
Venture into Dahl's Revolting Rhyme Little Red Riding Hood in this creative music making workshop led by professional musicians and a narrator. You'll have the chance to explore how musical motifs represent characters in the story – imagine what might happen when the sound of a devilishly hungry wolf meets the music of a devious and cunning Red Riding Hood. If you play an instrument bring it along, or have a go on some of our percussion. This workshop will help to set the scene for the concert during which the LSO will perform Paul Patterson’s version of Little Red Riding Hood.
Join fantastic puppeteers from the Armchair Puppet Theatre to create and manipulate your own shadow puppets. Together we’ll use them to re-tell one of Dahl’s Revolting Rhymes: The Three Little Pigs. Do be warned, Dahl has written no ordinary version of the story – there'll be twists and turns along the way, and a surprising ending...
Tickets £7 adults, £5 under-18s, advance booking essential – call the Box Office on 020 7638 8891
1.10–2.20pm, main foyers
A whistle-stop journey through Dahl’s Little Red Riding Hood and the Wolf. Let your imaginations run wild as we create music and sound effects to retell the twisted tale. Bring your instrument or use some of our percussion. This 20-minute workshop is a great chance to familiarise yourself with the story before we hear Paul Patterson’s musical version with the full LSO in concert.
Design and create your own shadow puppet before taking to the limelight on our shadow puppet screen in this drop-in workshop. There’ll be artists to help guide you through the activity, and a puppeteer who’ll interact with you and your puppet in your spotlight moment.
Come and colour your own character mask. We’ll have templates for you to choose from, and with the help of our artists you’ll have a marvellous mask to show off in no time.
Come along to practise the participation song and get your voices warmed up for the concert. There'll be a chance to learn Tim Redmond's Crocky-wock and we'll sing through some of Tim Minchin's Naughty from Matilda.
