Part of the 2016/17 season
Conductor Sir Mark Elder presents a trio of Russian works, from Tchaikovsky’s dazzling Violin Concerto to Shostakovich’s Fifteenth and final symphony.
A peaceful scene is set in Mussorgsky’s operatic Prelude, which conjures the image of sunrise over Moscow, before soaring melodies and lively violin fireworks take over in Tchaikovsky’s Concerto. Shostakovich’s Fifteenth Symphony, peppered with musical quotations, provides a gripping conclusion.
Sir Mark Elder once described Shostakovich as 'a hero figure for me’, and he chooses this great 20th-century symphonist to conclude an all-Russian evening, which spans a century of music. Anne-Sophie Mutter, described by The Times as 'the undisputed queen of violin-playing’ joins the exploration for Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto.
