Carving out a space that sits somewhere between the rich textures of ambient electronic music and the explorative compositional styles of minimalist pioneers like Steve Reich and Arvo Pärt, Brooklyn ensemble Bing & Ruth introduce their new album No Home of the Mind.

Led by pianist and composer David Moore, pieces slowly and patiently unfurl, with Moore’s own tender playing that focuses on the piano’s percussive qualities at the fore, guiding dense layers of woodwind, strings from rumbling lows into euphoric crescendos, warbling tape delay adding a transcendental afterglow to the compositions. Composed on seventeen pianos across North America and Europe over numerous sessions, tours, and travel, No Home of the Mind channels the idiosyncrasies and respective limitations of each instrument into inspiration.

Studying at the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music in New York’s Greenwich Village – an institution where the likes of John Cage and Steve Reich taught throughout the 50s and 60s, Moore began writing the sort of music he wanted to hear: minimalist ensemble music with a certain filmic sensitivity, one that prioritized grace and texture over the style's once-radical subtraction. Starting Bing & Ruth as a way to bring his compositions to an audience beyond academia, the ensemble released two records on influential experimental label RVNG INTL to critical acclaim, with No Home of the Mind released in February 2017 on 4AD.
