Part of the 2017/18 season
Throughout his career, Sir Simon Rattle has been an ardent champion of contemporary classical music. Now beginning his tenure as Music Director of the London Symphony Orchestra, he’s renewing his commitment to the music of living composers and contemporary British music, programming works by Oliver Knussen, Thomas Adès, Helen Grime and Sir Harrison Birtwistle in his opening concert.
In response, each of the four composers is curating their own programme in Milton Court, demonstrating the vibrant, flourishing landscape of contemporary classical music. In the first of the four, Oliver Knussen conducts the Birmingham Contemporary Music Group – of whom Sir Simon is Founding Patron – in a
programme inspired by Russian folk tales, Japanese poetry and prehistoric landscapes.
