Part of the 2017/18 season

Olena Tokar joined the distinguished line of singers who have taken part in the BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist scheme after impressing both the judges and the TV audiences of the finals of the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World Competition. Other competition winners over the years include Ailish Tynan, Christopher Maltman, Elizabeth Watts, Andrew Kennedy, Ilker Arcaryürek and, most recently, the 2017 winner Catriona Morison.

Olena was a finalist in 2013, and just a few months later was in the BBC’s studios delighting BBC producers with her sweet-toned, idiomatic and highly evocative performances of songs by Russian Romantic masters such as Glinka, Rimsky-Korsakov, Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov. There’s much more to her range than that, however (as her position as a regular soloist at the Leipzig Opera testifies), and for us today she sings songs by four composers in three languages.

This concert will be broadcast on BBC Radio 3 on 28 September
