Part of the 2017/18 season

Music is for everybody. That’s the message from Marin Alsop, who hosts this special family concert to celebrate Bernstein’s centenary.

Bernstein was the person who made Marin Alsop want to stand on the conductor’s podium. ‘Leonard Bernstein was a thinker, teacher, author, television star, provocateur, humanitarian – and he was my hero. Seeing Bernstein conduct a New York Philharmonic Young People’s Concert when I was nine years old convinced me that conducting was the only thing in the world that I wanted to do.’

So whether you have a budding young baton-waver of your own or just want to bring the whole family to experience the LSO, this concert is for you! With music by the man himself, and a world-class conductor leading the way, celebrate 100 years of Leonard Bernstein at this autumn’s LSO Discovery Family Concert.

About Family Concerts

LSO Discovery Family Concerts give families the opportunity to experience a world-class orchestra up-close, and learn more about the music we play.

Featuring excerpts from some of the most popular pieces in the repertoire, and often accompanied by a presenter to guide the audience through what you’ll be hearing, these concerts are the perfect way to introduce your children to the world of classical music.

They’re only an hour long and you’ll always have the chance to join in (no more sitting in silence!), whether during the concert itself or at the interactive workshops and masterclasses available throughout the foyers. You might even get the chance to meet the LSO musicians themselves!

This is a fun day out for all the family, and we make sure that everyone is looked after, has a great time and most of all enjoys the music!

Free Pre-Concert Activities

Get into the spirit of the concert with our fun interactive activities in the Barbican Foyers. These free drop-in sessions begin from 12pm.

Samba (starting at 12.00 / 12.35 / 13.10 / 13.45)
Get ready for a loud and energetic samba session! This fast-paced workshop will be based around Bernstein’s Cuban-inspired dance piece ‘Mambo’. Everyone is welcome and will get the chance to play a samba instrument.

Creative Music (starting at 12.00 / 12.35 / 13.10 / 13.45)
Join professional musicians in this creative music making workshop focusing on melodies. We’ll use tuned percussion and stringed instruments to create a new piece inspired by ‘Tonight’ from West Side Story. Bring your own instrument or try one of ours!

Singing and Conducting (starting at 12.00 / 12.35 / 13.10 / 13.45)
In this jam-packed workshop you’ll get to sing and conduct. At the end you could even conduct the whole workshop group! Great for any aspiring maestros who want to have a go conducting time signatures, speed and dynamics.

Art (drop-in 12.00-14.15)
Join artist Reza Ben Gajra and create your own silhouette art work inspired by New York – the setting of Bernstein’s West Side Story & On the Town. Attach your finished artwork to a window at home for the best effect!

Some of the workshops have a limited capacity, so arrive early to make sure you have time to take part in your favourite activity!
