The LSO and Marin Alsop join forces to mark the centenary of Leonard Bernstein, President of the Orchestra between 1987 and 1990.

As part of the centenary celebrations, Alsop brings together the first symphonies of two titans of classical music: Bernstein himself, and a composer who formed a central part of his conducting career, Mahler. Completed at the age of 24, Bernstein’s first work in the genre is dramatic and emotive, a work of conflict and mournful resolution, drawing on the biblical story of Jeremiah and the ruin of the Temple in Jerusalem.

Mahler’s First Symphony fuses the free imagination of a tone poem with the structural cohesion of earlier symphonic forms. From the initial stillness of its mesmeric opening grows an organic and picturesque symphony, which balances stirring, cheerful melodies with the storm and tempest of a hero’s struggle.
