Alice Sara Ott continues her series of musical collaborations with Messiaen's Quartet for the End of Time, a landmark work of the 20th century.
Written when the composer was a prisoner of war in Germany in 1941, Messiaen's Quartet for the End of Time is an astonishing musical statement – ethereal, intricate and questioning, sometimes spare and haunting, sometimes furiously rhythmic. It was written for the instruments Messiaen had available to him at the time – piano, clarinet, violin and cello, brought together in varying combinations – and was inspired by the musicians he lived alongside in the camp, fitting part of Alice Sara Ott's series of BBC Radio 3 Concerts which celebrate the power of making music with others.
Change of Artist
Violinist Nemanja Radulović has withdrawn from this performance due to health reasons. We are very grateful to Mari Samuelsen for stepping in to replace him. Please also note that, in a change to some early listings, Andreas Ottensamer is no longer able to perform in this concert.
