Telling of hot, dusty nights on the Silk Road and storms on the Arabian sea, the fearless Scheherazade invented stories night after night to entertain the murderous King. The tales of One Thousand and One Nights and the evocative music of Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade have inspired the new pieces in this end-of-year showcase.

Rising star Elim Chan conducts the LSO and ensembles brought together by LSO Discovery, the LSO’s education and community programme. There’ll be newly devised pieces by Classical Meets Jazz and Howard Moody’s LSO On Track Next Generation – a group of talented young players from East London – plus audio-visual work created by LSO Discovery’s Digital Technology Group, and performances from LSO Create and the LSO Discovery Senior Choir.

6.45pm: Classical Meets Jazz perform on the Barbican foyers.
7.30pm: The concert continues in the Barbican Hall.

Elim Chan’s appearance with the LSO is generously supported by the Reignwood Culture Foundation

About the Ensembles

The LSO Discovery Senior Choir welcomes young singers from all London boroughs, ages 11 to 18. The choir performs a new piece composed by Rachel Leach.

LSO Create is a musical club for adults with learning disabilities, their supporters and carers. Musicians from the LSO join in the monthly Create sessions at LSO St Luke’s to compose, improvise and create music together. In this showcase, the Orchestra provides a backing for a new piece devised by Create and workshop leader Mark Withers.

LSO Digital Technology Group meets to produce original music. The group makes use of LSO St Luke’s Candide Discovery Studio to record, write and perform grime, rock, hip-hop, electroacoustic and classical music. The group is open to young people aged 12–20.

LSO On Track Next Generation creates inspirational musical opportunities for young instrumental musicians in East London – through workshops, rehearsals and performances. The ensemble perform Above the Palm Trees, specially composed by Howard Moody.
