Complex and crystalline, Bartók’s String Quartet No 4 plays with symmetry, echoes and mirroring to create a work of harmonic and structural brilliance.
The Romanian Aracadia Quartet untangle the dazzling effects, arresting sounds and compositional games Bartók employed for his Fourth String Quartet in this lunchtime concert. Written with an arch structure, the different movements are thematically linked, as motifs and phrases are echoed and toyed with throughout the piece.
The Quartet is complimented by Enescu’s heartening and romantic Aubade, a traditional song for lovers parting at dawn, and Janáček’s passionate and painful ‘Intimate Letters’.
