DEBUSSY String Quartet
BARTÓK String Quartet No 1
Part of 2019/20 season
Please note that finish times are approximate and subject to change
The Brodsky Quartet pair two poetic and inventive pieces by Debussy and Bartók, drawing out the impressionistic influences in the first of Bartók’s String Quartets.
Fellow-composer Kodály described Bartók’s String Quartet No 1 as ‘an intimate drama, a kind of ‘Return to Life’ of one who has reached the brink of the abyss’. Opening with what Bartók called a ‘funeral dirge’, the momentum steadily builds as spirits begin to lift, transforming the tone into one of wit and cheerful light-heartedness.
Sensual, imaginative and playful, Debussy’s only string quartet foreshadows Bartok’s later work in its remarkable flexibility, subtlety and rich harmonic feel.
