From African American spirituals to Hungarian folk music, hear stirring folk melodies in this concert of string quartets by Bartók and Dvořák.
Dvořák’s resonant String Quartet No 12 is one of the most well-known of all his works for chamber ensemble. Rich in the harmonies and rhythms of Native American music and African American spirituals, it is at turns sweet, joyful and melancholy in tone.
Bartók’s final two String Quartets are more unsettling in character, with the forlorn melodies and shadows of his Fifth, and the elegant but tragic Sixth, a piece which was darkened by the illness and death of Bartók’s mother and the dawn of World War II.
