The British pianist Peter Donohoe brings a wealth of insight to late Beethoven and Tippett’s stylishly eccentric piano sonatas

By turns dramatic and ethereal, Tippett’s piano music draws together musical styles in the cosmopolitan fashion which has characterised English classical music for centuries. Beethoven’s late A major sonata is similarly eclectic and as beautiful as it is unexpected. The sonata shifts and turns, as elements of Romantic lied combine with old-style fugue, and fragmented, symphonic textures.
