Bartók’s last, great masterpiece is heard alongside the gruesome fairy-tale of Duke Bluebeard’s Castle, conducted by Music Director Sir Simon Rattle.
Bartók loved folk music, not just for its artistic quality, but also as an expression of the communities which keep it alive. Nowhere are those values clearer than in his last great masterpiece, the Concerto for Orchestra. With no official soloist, a diverse collection of instruments performs to one another, modelling how social cohesion can be achieved through the celebration of difference, not in its removal.
From an optimistic vision of community to a gripping operatic horror story. Duke Bluebeard’s young bride Judith arrives at his dark, forbidding castle. She tries to let in more light, persuading her new husband to open the first of seven doors. So begins a disturbing journey of discovery that leads to the seventh door, the castle’s grave secret and her untimely fate.
