Haydn String Quartet in D major, Op 76/5
Dobrinka Tabakova The Smile of Flamboyant Wings (ECHO commission)
Mendelssohn String Quartet No 6 in F minor, Op 80
One of Germany’s most insightful young string quartets establishes their credentials in classics by Haydn and Mendelssohn – plus something freshly minted.
The Goldmund Quartet begin their ECHO recital with Haydn – always a hallmark of joyous quartet playing – but they’ve also commissioned a new piece from Dobrinka Tabakova, specially conceived to sit next to Mendelssohn’s startlingly passionate late quartet.
We’re living in a new golden age for string quartets, but when the Washington Post enthuses about the 'intelligence and wit' of this dynamic young German ensemble, it’s worth paying special attention. Their commitment to Haydn and Mendelssohn proves their seriousness, while Dobrinka Tabakova’s new work demonstrates that for the Goldmunds, tradition is about the future, as well as the past.
