Beat the rush-hour crowds, and discover one of the landmarks of 20th-century music: Shostakovich’s devastating Thirteenth Symphony, ‘Babi Yar’.

Gianandrea Noseda, the LSO’s Principal Guest Conductor, has close personal connections to Russia, and when it comes to Shostakovich’s Thirteenth, nothing less will do. A full orchestra, a men’s choir and a Russian bass with a dark tone come together to speak uncompromising truth to power.

The symphony sets verses by the dissident poet Yevgeny Yevtushenko: a protest against state-sanctioned antisemitism, told in music that burns itself onto your memory. Gianandrea Noseda presents and conducts, and the superb Russian bass Alexander Vinogradov is our soloist today – adding another layer of authenticity to a 20th-century landmark.

This concert is part of Half Six Fix, a different way to experience the LSO, with an introduction to the music from Gianandrea Noseda, and digital programme notes on your phone or device. Grab a drink, take your seat and enjoy the music.
