Part of 2020/21 season

The National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain's 164 teenagers express their hopes, fears, and big dreams for the world around them as they come together on the concert platform.

In this varied and passionate programme, NYO uses music to share their concerns for the fate of the natural world. In Gabriella Smith's Field Guide, the musicians transform to become a carpet of insects filling the concert hall, before voicing their fears for our environmental future through Adam Schoenberg's vibrant percussion concerto, Losing Earth.

The concert concludes with a journey up a mountain in musical form, Richard Strauss's Alpine Symphony, a love letter to the natural world as it was in 1915. But NYO's teenagers, just over 100 years later, live in a starkly different world, where climate change threatens life as we know it: how do we hear this music in 2021, performed by the young people who carry the burden of our environmental future on their shoulders?
