Travelling at this time of day is rarely fun. So tonight, try a different route, as Marin Alsop and the LSO perform Rachmaninoff’s Symphonic Dances – Moscow to Beverly Hills in just 45 minutes.
Exiled from the Russia of his youth, Sergei Rachmaninoff lived the life of a celebrity in Los Angeles. But though you can take the man out of Russia, you can’t take Russia out of the man, and in his Symphonic Dances, Rachmaninoff fuses the melancholy of exile with the driving rhythms of jazz-age America.
It's a heady cocktail: music of widescreen vistas and flamboyant colour, all drenched in an unmistakably Russian sense of loss, and filled with melodies that seem to stretch out to the horizon. Dream ballet? Concerto for orchestra? Or a great Russian symphony hiding in plain sight? With our dynamic guest conductor and presenter Marin Alsop, it could be all of them at the same time. The Tube can wait; we’ve got stories to tell you.
This concert is part of Half Six Fix, a different way to experience the LSO, with an introduction to the music from Marin Alsop, and digital programme notes on your phone or device. Grab a drink, take your seat and enjoy the music.
