A chance to escape the daily to-do list and immerse oneself into the lush, lyrical melodies of English composer Edward Elgar who wished for music ‘all around us!’
Hear his work alongside some of the key European composers that he admired the most, travelling to hear their work and making Viennese connections that saw his concerto performed by master-violinist Fritz Kreisler. With some of his favourites including Schumann, Wagner and Liszt, this BBC Radio 3 Lunchtime Concert series sees the RPS award-winning Nash Ensemble explore the composer’s stand out solo and chamber works, teasing out his continental influences in programmes that transport us to a period of immense influence and creativity at the beginning of the 20th century.
From popular works for violin including the gloriously melodic Chanson de Matin and Chanson de Nuit to his sprightly piano repertoire in Concert Allegro for solo piano and Piano Quintet in A minor, each performance is complimented by a programme of chamber repertoire that would most certainly have been on Elgar’s Desert Island Discs playlist. Featuring Schuman’s piano quartet and quintet, songs by Wagner and Kreisler’s joyful Liebesleid & Liebesleid for violin, this a perfect lunchtime retreat in the city.
