Ravel’s Boléro, Rimsky-Korsakov’s Capriccio Español, and a splash of Saint-Saëns with pianist Javier Perianes. On a January day, Elim Chan conducts a concert that’s drenched in sunshine.

‘He’s mad!’ cried an audience member at an early performance of Ravel’s Boléro. ‘She understands,’ said Ravel. It’s the climax of an evening with a distinctly Mediterranean flavour, with Spanish keyboard star Javier Perianes as the soloist in Saint-Saëns’ glittering ‘Egyptian’ concerto.

Since becoming the first woman to win the Donatella Flick LSO Conducting Competition in 2014, Elim Chan has established herself as a conductor with a rare ear for colour. And this programme is all about orchestral colours. Rimsky-Korsakov’s Capriccio espagnol is the sound of a Russian composer intoxicated by the sights and sounds of Spain, while Ravel’s Mother Goose is as subtle as Boléro is passionate.
