Rhythm, glamour and the sad, sweet songs of exile. Sir Simon Rattle introduces Rachmaninoff’s neglected Third Symphony.
Rush hour is time to head home: but for Sergei Rachmaninoff, after the Russian Revolution, that was no longer an option. He wrote his Third Symphony in exile in Switzerland, and while it’s full of the energy of the 1930s, the sounds of old Russia just keep breaking through. Sir Simon Rattle loves it; tonight he explains why.
And then he conducts the LSO in a full performance of one of the least-known works by one of the 20th-century’s best-loved composers. Like all our Half Six Fix concerts, the atmosphere is informal, and it’s all over in time for you to beat the rush hour and still get home. So instead of minding the gap, why not fill it with music – and maybe discover a new favourite classic in the process?
This concert is part of Half Six Fix, a different way to experience the LSO, with an introduction to the music from Sir Simon Rattle, and digital programme notes on your phone or device. Grab a drink, take your seat and enjoy the music.
