Gustav Mahler takes on the universe and goes down fighting: Sir Simon Rattle conducts the tragic Sixth Symphony.
A great artist felled by a hammer-blow of fate; a personal tragedy echoed in music that tests the power of love against impossible odds. Some say that Mahler’s tempestuous Sixth Symphony is his greatest, and it’s a musical experience that leaves few listeners unmoved.
‘An outstanding performance, powerful, bristling with rampant energy and at times, serenely sublime and transcendent,’ wrote Bachtrack when Sir Simon conducted the Sixth in 2017, ‘… and the London Symphony Orchestra was on top form, living and breathing every note and emotion with complete conviction’.
