Pianist Boris Giltburg performs sonatas by Rachmaninoff and Prokofiev – despatches from a world in turmoil, played by a virtuoso for whom the notes are only ever the start of the story.
As imperial Russia careered toward chaos and revolution, Rachmaninoff and Prokofiev channelled the spirit of a turbulent age. Rachmaninoff’s tempestuous First Piano Sonata takes its cues from Dante; Prokofiev, a generation younger, wrote his restless Second Sonata beneath the gathering storm-clouds of 1914. Few living performers capture that power like the Russian-born Boris Giltburg, a pianist whose aim, he says, is ‘to delve deeper and deeper into the world behind the notes’.
