Two great artists, and the journey of a lifetime: Sir Simon Rattle and Evgeny Kissin explore Stravinsky and Rachmaninoff.
When Russia collapsed into revolution, two refugee composers built new lives in the west. Stravinsky embraced the shock of the new, while Rachmaninoff astonished the world as a pianist of breathtaking daring and power. Today, Sir Simon Rattle leads a personal odyssey through some of Stravinsky’s quirkiest miniatures – before joining Evgeny Kissin in the piece they call the ‘Everest of piano concertos’.
Simon Rattle loves Stravinsky’s shorter pieces, and his ‘Stravinsky Journey’ is his own way of sharing some rare gems. Pianist Evgeny Kissin, meanwhile, has been an international superstar since he was ten years old. For once, it feels like an understatement to say that Rachmaninoff’s music is practically in his blood.
Standard seating is being used for this concert. We encourage audience members to bring and wear a face covering, unless you are exempt.
