Pianist Kirill Gerstein curates an early-evening chamber concert celebrating four centuries of musical mavericks, as part of his Spotlight Artist series with the LSO.
The Programme
Kirill Gerstein brings together his closest musical colleagues for a programme inspired by the music of Central Europe. Zingy, folk-flavoured masterpieces by Joseph Haydn, Béla Bartók, György Ligeti and Ludwig van Beethoven strike sparks against the romance of Robert Schumann and the dazzling imagination of Thomas Adès.
The Performers
Put the most influential British composer of our time together with a virtuoso pianist who speaks the same musical language and the results are bound to be remarkable. ‘Thomas Adès and Kirill Gerstein’s collaboration is taking its place amid the greats of music history’, says The New York Times, and this is a real showstopper of a concert: a carnival of vivid colours and vibrant musical ideas brought together and played with fire by two of the 21st century’s most exciting musical minds.
Recorded for future broadcast on BBC Radio 3
